NEW CALGARY CHOIR FOR ADULTS WITH DEMENTIA
By JB Music
Memory Lane Chorus: Adults with dementia and their caregivers join their voices in harmony
Youth Singers of Calgary (YSC) and JB Music Therapy (JBMT) have developed a new program, Memory Lane Chorus. This pilot project provides adults with dementia and their care partners, family members, and friends the opportunity to enjoy a positive, joyful singing experience in a safe, judgement free environment. No singing experience necessary!
Singing in a group increases feelings of belonging and community, encourages socialization, and improves quality of life. Singing provides mental stimulation that improves brain function and reduces stress, anxiety, and depression. Typically, emotional memory is one of the last things to disappear in those with dementia and music may help recall those faded memories.
Memory Lane Chorus begins January 9, 2019. Sessions will be held Wednesdays at 1:30 PM at the Performing Arts Youth Centre. For more information, please contact: yscadmin@youthsingers.org
